A disadvantage of living in the United Kingdom is that everything is released later than in the rest of the world, and when things are finally released, they cost more to boot.
Regarding DVDs, injury is often added to insult: because our televisions display 50 fields per second instead of 6000/1001, and because they display 576 lines per frame instead of 480, a variety of weird and wonderful techniques have to be used to convert footage to our video standard.
The people who produce DVDs for the UK market are often lazy and/or incompetent, and so often we are better off importing the DVD from abroad. At least we can take solace in the fact that this is sometimes cheaper than buying it over here.
Inspired by the excellent Michael D's Region 4 DVD Info Page, which assesses DVDs based on the quality of the transfer to the Australian video format, I thought I would post my comments on the quality of some of the Region 2 DVDs that I have bought.
